Then\, we’ll announce the ten UpPrize Semifinalists who will proceed in the challenge for a chance to win up to $125\,000 for their business. \nThe BNY UpPrize Social Innovation Challenge\, powered by Innovation Works and funded by the BNY Mellon Foundation of Southwestern Pennsylvania\, fosters partnerships across sectors to address our community’s most critical issues. This competition aims to nurture ideas and solutions\, helping social entrepreneurs reach their full potential. \nThis year’s challenge calls on social entrepreneurs to compete for significant non-dilutive funding and business support. Finalists stand to win $300\,000 in prize monies and receive accelerator assistance to launch or expand startups using technology to address social inequities. \nThree finalists will receive a total prize pool of $300\,000\, with awards distributed as follows: \n\nFirst Place: $125\,000\nSecond Place: $100\,000\nThird Place: $75\,000\n\nAdditionally\, finalists will join the inaugural UpPrize Masterclass cohort\, tailored to focus on customer discovery\, beginning in January 2025. They will also enjoy access to Innovation Works’ networking events and ongoing support.

Their conversation will be moderation by Lori Dunn\, COO of Optimus Technologies. Hear their insight on working with venture firms as a start-up and ask them questions on how to know if an investor is really right for you. \nAbout the Panel: \nModerator: \nLori Dunn is the COO of Optimus Technologies which decarbonizes heavy-duty fleets. As a recognized leader in climatetech sales and growth\, she has worked with established companies and franchises to manage and reduce electric costs with smart energy platforms and demand response. She is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer and winner of a Factor8 award in Sales Leadership. She holds a BA from California State University – Fullerton and an M.A. in Sustainability & M.A. in Conflict from the Heller School at Brandeis University. Lori has a passion for developing and mentoring up-and-coming talent and hiking with her dog. \nSreekar Gadde\, Managing Partner at BlueTree Venture Capital & Executive Director for BlueTree Allied Angels\, leverages his background in engineering\, law\, and business to identify and analyze early-stage companies for potential investment opportunities. In addition\, he assists management teams of early- and mid-stage companies in developing an IP strategy that complements the company’s business strategy. Sree’s work experience spans various fields including Artificial Intelligence (Edge Case Research\, Aspinity\, TalkMeUp\, and Ariel Precision Medicine)\, medicine (Lindy BioSciences and CytoAgents)\, data analytics (BlastPoint)\, and consumer goods (Aeronics\, Anglr\, and Crafty Counter). Independent of industry\, Sree works with companies to identify what differentiates them from their competition and determine what forms of IP provide them the best strategic value to protect that differentiation. \nPrior to joining BlueTree\, Sree worked as an IP litigator and an IP prosecutor at two top law firms\, Ropes and Gray and Sterne Kessler\, as well as Assistance Chief IP Counsel for Dynamics\, Inc. In addition\, he was a validation engineer and team lead for Intel’s microprocessor design business unit. \nVen Raju is the President & CEO\, Innovation Works and the Managing Director\, Riverfront Ventures. Mr. Raju has more than 20 years of experience in venture capital and private equity investing having led/co-led all facets of the investment process\, including origination\, due diligence\, transaction structuring and portfolio management with strategic and operational oversight via board of directors and executive-level participation. \nPreviously\, Mr. Raju served as managing director at Northwell Ventures\, the corporate venture arm of Northwell Health (one of the largest health systems in the country). At Northwell Ventures\, Mr. Raju led the investment team to deploy capital to early and growth stage companies in health tech\, digital health and med tech verticals. Prior to that\, Mr. Raju served as partner at Chestnut Street Ventures\, a vertical agnostic growth equity fund. At Chestnut\, Mr. Raju led the investment team to deploy growth equity capital in health tech\, internet of things (IOT) computing devices\, software as a service (SaaS)\, AI/machine learning\, robotics and life sciences companies. Prior to that\, Mr. Raju served as partner at Choate Capital\, where he led middle market direct investments totaling more than $800 million in equity. Over the course of his career\, Mr. Raju has helped to shepherd a number of companies to a strategic/public exit including Domo\, Bloom Energy\, Accolade\, Freshly\, Relayr and Unity Biotechnology. Mr. Raju began his career as a strategy consultant\, advising Fortune 100 clients in mergers and acquisitions.

DESCRIPTION:Investment in Pittsburgh’s technology sector\n\n\nErnst & Young LLP and Innovation Works\, Inc. are proud to present our ninth annual review of Pittsburgh’s technology investment landscape. This report provides a comprehensive review of investment and exit activity in the Pittsburgh region from 2011 to 2020.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe year 2020 saw dramatic swings in regional investment trends as the COVID-19 pandemic led startups to raise funds to bolster their balance sheets and extend their runway. In total\, 171 companies raised $993 million\, a decrease from the almost $3 billion raised in 2019\, but reflecting the second-best investment year in the past decade. In the past 10 years\, nearly 600 unique Pittsburgh companies attracted a total of over $7.2b in investment.  \n\n\n\n\nThe local investment community stepped up\, with the help of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania (Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority)\, to support our vulnerable early-stage technology companies get through this pandemic. Taken together\, Innovation Works\, Birchmere Ventures\, Draper Triangle and Riverfront Ventures invested $5.25 million\, in addition to normal investments\, into regional startups as part of a pandemic relief effort. Additionally\, firms from outside our region are increasingly attracted by Pittsburgh’s growing reputation as a technology hub and further contributed to investment totals. Approximately 300 firms from around the world invested in Pittsburgh companies in the last five years\, including 42 making their first investment in our region in 2020.   \n\n\n\n\nThese firms were attracted by Pittsburgh’s regional strengths in artificial intelligence (AI)\, robotics and life sciences\, with autonomous vehicles and robotics continuing to draw the lion’s share of investment dollars (55%) in 2020.  Pittsburgh’s world-class technical capabilities and talent\, the $10 billion of university research over the past decade\, capital efficiency\, and $14.7 billion of exit proceeds over the past decade combine to make Pittsburgh an attractive destination for investors.   \nBoth Ernst & Young LLP (EY) and Innovation Works are committed to supporting entrepreneurial growth in the region. Tracking investment activity helps us begin conversations with new investors interested in regional deals\, informs local investors about our strengths versus other communities\, and chronicles what’s working and where we need to focus efforts.
